How to get to the Atanasio Girardot Stadium

By subway: at any subway station you can buy a temporary card for COP 12,100. This value does not include any trip or ticket, so you must charge at least COP 4,400 to this card, which is the value of a ticket for an occasional traveler. Once you are in the subway, you must take line B and get off at Estadio station.

By public buses: there are some routes of Laureles and Transportes Medellín that pass by the stadium, however, as a tourist or foreign visitor, we do not recommend you to take this type of public service.

By cab, Uber or similar services: you can indicate that you are going to the Estadio subway station or the Obelisco shopping center.

Immerse yourself in the pre-match atmosphere

You can arrive a couple of hours before the start of the game and stay at the Obelisco shopping mall, where you will find shops selling food and drinks. You can also go to Avenida 70, near the Estadio subway station. The atmosphere is usually livelier at the Obelisco, as it is closer to the stadium. However, if the game is Atlético Nacional’s, it is very likely that Avenida 70 will have a very lively atmosphere.

How to dress

In the city of Medellín we have two soccer teams: Atlético Nacional and Independiente Medellín. The colors of Atletico Nacional are green and white and those of Independiente Medellin are red and blue. Make sure that the garment that covers the upper part of the body (t-shirt, blouse, sweatshirt or jacket) is one of the colors of the local team playing that day. Otherwise, you can use colors such as black or gray that do not represent any particular team.

If the game you are attending is a classic (what in other parts of the world is known as a “derby”), you can choose to wear a jersey of the team you like the most (either Atletico Nacional or Independiente Medellin) or opt to wear neutral colors such as white, black or gray.

Important: if the game is a classic, keep in mind that the North grandstand is only for Independiente Medellín fans and the South grandstand is only for Atlético Nacional fans. If you are going to enter one of these stands, be sure to wear clothes with the colors of the corresponding team.

Where to eat

On Avenida 70, just outside the Estadio subway station and in the Obelisco shopping mall and its surroundings you will find a wide range of fast food places and restaurants. If you prefer to eat during the game or during halftime, in the aisles of each stand you will also find fast food places selling hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and the like.

Buy home team jerseys

Around the stadium, near the Estadio subway station and near the Obelisco shopping mall, you will find numerous street vendors offering replica jerseys of the teams.

If you wish to purchase original T-shirts in the area, here are the options.

Atlético Nacional apparel:

  • Green Stadium Store, located on the façade of the South stand of the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. Hours: Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact telephone: 01 8000 423 582. WhatsApp line: +57 (333) 636 6669.
  • La Tienda Barrista Los Del Sur, located inside the Obelisco shopping mall, on the second floor, local 120. Hours: Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. On Sundays, if there is a team game, it provides service in the hours prior to the game. Contact telephone number: +57 (604) 260 6944. WhatsApp line: +57 (302) 457 8798.
  • René Higuita store, located inside the Obelisco shopping mall, on the second floor, local 115. René Higuita is one of the most important soccer players in the history of Colombia and Atlético Nacional. He was also goalkeeper for Independiente Medellín before turning professional and at the end of his career. There you can find Atlético Nacional and Colombia National Team clothing.

Deportivo Independiente Medellín apparel:

  • DIM Estadio Store, located on the façade of the eastern grandstand of the Atanasio Girardot Stadium. Hours: Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Contact telephone: +57 (604) 590 6934. WhatsApp line: +57 (301) 352 9302.
  • Rexixtenxia Norte store, located inside the Obelisco shopping center, on the second floor, local 4808. Hours: Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. On Sundays, if there is a team game, it provides service in the hours prior to the game.

These stores offer original jerseys as well as replicas of classic or vintage style jerseys. If you want to buy the official team jersey, you should tell the store staff.

Be prepared in case of rain

Check the weather forecast. If there is a chance of rain, we recommend that you buy a plastic sheet to cover yourself. On the outskirts of the stadium you will find numerous street vendors offering plastic capes (although they call them “tents”). They cost COP 2,000 each. It is best to buy them before entering the stadium because, if you want to buy them in the stands when it has already started to rain, the price will be much higher.

When to enter the stadium

If the game corresponds to a regular date of the national league: it is advisable to enter 20 to 30 minutes in advance.

If the match is a classic Nacional vs Medellín or corresponds to an advanced stage of any tournament (such as quarterfinals, semifinals or finals) or special competitions (such as Copa Libertadores de América or Copa Suramericana) or is against a particularly attractive opponent (a historical rival that is going through a good moment, a renowned team or a high level sports team): it would be better to enter the stands one hour in advance.

Leaving the stadium

You can head back to the Estadio subway station or the Obelisco shopping mall, which are safe places to take a cab or a service like Uber. If you have a metro card, you can also take the train from Estadio station.
